    Water Jet Cutting

With the addition of a water jet cutting machine, we are able to section large components very quickly, enabling us to enhance our industry leading turnaround times that customers have come to expect from the Protech Team. The Maxiem 1515 delivers excellent cutting performance with an ample cutting area that allows us to make complex cuts with minimal impact to the coated surface with a linear positional accuracy of 0.0030″. The an X-Y cutting envelope of 5’2” x 5’2” and a 12” Z travel provides us with sufficient space for even the most complex sectioning requirements. Please contact us today to discuss you water jet sectioning needs.

    Surface Roughness

Surface roughness is a component of measuring surface profiles. It calculates the deviations in peaks and valleys on the surface of a material. Utilizing a 5 micron stylus, Protech Lab Corp offers the following modes: Ra, Rp, Rv, and Ry.

    Bend Testing

The bend test is a type of adhesion test which evaluates the ductility and overall soundness of a coating. Protech Lab Corp utilizes a 0.5″ mandrel to apply steady, even force to a coated panel until the customer specified angle is met.

    Recommended panel size is:
    1″ (25.4mm) width
    4-6″ (101.6-152.4 mm) length
    approximately 0.060″ (1.5. mm) thick

Please provide fully coated or nearly fully coated panels for testing.

    Hardness Testing

Hardness testing measures a material’s ability to resist penetration of a harder object under rigidly controlled conditions. Protech Lab Corp offers hardness testing to ASTM E18 and E384.

Types of macro hardness offered include:
Rockwell Hardness (A scale, B scale, C scale, D scale)
Superficial Hardness (N scale, T scale, Y scale)

Types of micro hardness offered include:
    Knoop Microhardness (10-1000gf)
    Vickers Microhardness (10-1000gf)

    Erosion Testing

Erosion data is a function of a material’s resistance to stock loss at controlled parameters. Our test conforms to the basic requirements of ASTM G76 (Conducting Erosion Tests by Solid Particle Impingement). However, this test is very specific for different companies.

A coated specimen is prepared in a manner to ensure flatness.

    Recommended panel size is:
    1″ (25.4mm) width
    ≥ 3.5″ (88.9 mm) length
    .125″-.280″ (3.175-7.112 mm) total thickness

Results can be reported using the following methods, by loss of thickness (Depth Method) and/or by weight loss.

    Tensile Testing

The tensile bond strength is a measure of the adhesion of a coating to a substrate or the cohesion strength of the coating in tension mode normal to the surface area. In our normal course of buisness the test conforms to the requirements of ASTM C633. Special testing that deviates from the ASTM spec are welcome.

We keep FM1000, EC2086, and EC2214 adhesives in stock for testing. The FM1000 is an elastomeric adhesive, and the EC materials are structural adhesives. Please contact us in regards to what adhesive is best suited for your testing needs.

At Protech Lab Corp tensile test turnaround time
is typically one to two buisness days.

    Metallographic Evaluation

Protech Lab Corp’s day-to-day evaluations utilize bright field optical microscopes and computer aided image analysis software. Evaluations are performed to ASTM E2109 or customer provided standards.

Some of the characteristics commonly evaluated but not limited to are: porosity content, oxide content, inclusions, unmelted/globular particle content, interface condition, thickness (by calibrated microscope reticle), foreign material, cracks, and delaminations.

Along with each specimen evaluation, a digital photo micrograph is included of the typical structure as referenced in customer spec or request. Additional digital photos are available per request.

We also offer flourecent dye analysis, differential interference contrast (DIC), and stereoscopic photos. Please contact us to discuss your evaluation needs.

    Metallographic Preparation

At Protech Lab Corp, we section, mount, grind, and polish your samples using procedures designed in-house to bring out the true structure of the coating while minimizing damage.

By having multiple mounting medias, we ensure that coatings are epoxy infiltrated before they go through grinding and polishing. Contact us to discuss what mounting method is best suited for your coating.

Through extensive research and development, a variety of polishing procedures specifically suited to different coatings have been developed to accomodate a number of different processess and materials. These include but are not limited too:
